Appliances and equipment account for about $4,300 in new homes and $3,700 in existing ones. Furnishings can be a bigger leap: $8,300 for new construction, $3,900 for existing homes\u2014especially if you\u2019re moving into a larger space. The biggest first-year expense? Alterations and repairs, which average $14,300 for new homes and $11,100 for existing homes.
